INFO - Understanding Ansys Diagnostic Logs

Description

Ansys diagnostic logs contain tons of helpful information that can be used to troubleshoot license or software errors.  There are two different sets of logs that can be generated - both are helpful.  This article will highlight the most useful information contained within each:

  • License Server Logs
  • Client Logs

Solution

INFO

Except for the .NFO file, all diagnostic logs should be opened with your favorite text editor (Windows Notepad, or our favorite, Notepad++). 

 

 

Client Logs

Name & Contents Filename Example

Client Specified License Servers File

  • License Servers Client has Specified

 

ansyslmd.ini

System Diagnostic Info File

  • License Connectivity Status (FlexNet Publisher)
  • Ipconfig /all output
  • Operating system, CPU/GPU
  • Display/monitors, hard drives
  • Inbound Firewall Rules/Exceptions
  • Environmental variables
diagnosticInfoScreenOutput.txt

 

Application License Logs

  • License check out/in requests
  • License Checkout Denials/Errors
  • Specific Increments the client is requesting

\licdebug_files\licdebug.(product).(version).out

 

(One log per product. Only included if the product has been opened)

Installation Log

  • What products & version were installed
  • Installation Source Files Location (Setup.exe, network/local)
  • Installation Destination Directory
  • Installation errors
install.log

Installation Errors Log

  • This log will only exist if install errors occurred
install.err

License Client Error Log

  • Errors encountered during Client Licensing Install
  • This log will only exist if install errors occurred
install_licconfig.err

Install License Config Log

  • Client Hostname
  • Installation Directory
  • Installation and configuration log for Client Licensing Settings

Windows System Info File

  • Installed Programs Listed in Start Menu
  • Hardware Specs
  • Network Adapters & IP Addresses
  • Disks & Free Space
  • Startup Programs (help identify AV)
  • Windows Event Logs
  • Running Tasks/Processes (help identify AV)
  • Environment variables

License Server Logs

  • Currently installed license file(s)
  • License features/increments
  • HostID
  • Vendor Daemon static port (if specified)

license_files\ansyslmd.lic 

 

(if multiple license files (.lic) are installed, they will be named different.  Multiple files can only be installed manually)

FlexNet Debug Log

  • License Manager Startup Logs
  • License check in/outs/denials/errors
  • Network statistics, service status and memory usage
license.log

Licensing Interconnect Log

  • License Manager startup, licenses available
  • Clients accessing server including check ins/outs, Ansys versions used
  • Options file info if applicable
ansysli_server.log

License Manger Center Log

  • License Server starts and stops
  • Adding new license files
  • Logs viewed via web interface
ansyslmcenter.log

Installation Error Log

  • Any errors that occurred during product installations
  • Log file is only present if errors have occurred
install.err

Installation Log

  • Details of the License Manager installation(s)
  • Source and destination directories
install.log

License Manager Installation  Config Error Log

  • Any error occurring during License Manager installations
  • Log file is only present if errors have occurred
install_licconfig.err

License Manager Installation Config Log

  • License Manager configuration details
  • Files moved, present, or missing during config
  • Checking if ports in use
install_licconfig.log

Options File

  • Only included if an options file has been created.

Local Host File

  • Copy of Windows hosts file containing any manually mapped hosts/IPs
hosts

Backup of old .INI and .LIC Files

  • Previously installed license files are backed up when installing new licenses.
license_files\backup\* folder

Previous Server .LOG

  • Previous versions of License Server logs, including newer logs should the main log files grow too large

Product Compatibility List

  • Products which the License Manager is capable of serving, not what products are installed.
  • Typically updated with new releases of License Manager

List of Included Diagnostic Files

  • Inventory list of all files included in the License Manager diagnostic bundle
LMCENTER_DIAGNOSTICS_FILELIST.TXT

Web Server Log (Not Useful)

  • Configuration files and settings for the License Manager web interface (Tomcat)
