HOW TO - Test if a Dell Motherboard has Failed

                          Authored by Caleb Scharf July 3rd, 2026 12 views 0 likes KB2198378

                          Description

If you Dell laptop won't post and you suspect a failed motherboard, there is one test that typically requested by Dell tech support.

                          Note

This procedure was for a Dell Precision 7560, but will likely work on other Precision models and may others.

                          Solution

                          1. Remove the bottom case from the laptop and disconnect the battery.
                          2. Hold down the M key
                          3. While holding the M key, plug in AC power and press the power button.
                          4. Release the M and power buttons, watch the power led status light for any illumination (often found on the front edge of Precision Laptops).
                          5. No response from the power led light signifies the motherboard has likely failed.
