ERROR
On a machine using Ansys Shared Web Licensing, users can't check out a license (for example, Ansys Mechanical Enterprise). In Ansys Licensing Settings → Products/Shared → On demand, the product's row shows:
In use: 0
Available: 0
Software & Version
Ansys Shared Web Licensing with Ansys Licensing Settings 2024 R1 and later
Any Shared Web product, for example Ansys Mechanical Enterprise - Shared Web or Ansys Discovery Pro - Shared Web.
*This example was taken from this version but is not necessarily limited to this version.
Description/Cause
This can look like the organization has lost its entitlement or that the license count has been reset to zero. It usually means something else.
The counts in Ansys Licensing Settings are shown from the perspective of the user and machine running the utility:
- In use is the number of seats of that product that this user currently has checked out. It is not the organization's total usage.
- Available is the number of seats that are free to check out across the organization right now. It is not the organization's total entitlement.
A reading of 0 In use / 0 Available means this user has no seat checked out and every seat in the organization's Shared Web pool is in use by other users or machines. Checkouts fail until a seat is released.
*The cause(s)/solution(s) we identified in this documented instance may not be the only cause(s)/solution(s) for this error.
Solution
- Confirm that the pool is at capacity
- Sign in to the Ansys Licensing Portal as a Licensing Portal Administrator.
- Under Web, select Assignments and note the total number of seats your organization has for the affected product.
- Under Web, select Transactions.
- Set the date range to include the time of the failed checkout, then select the Active Sessions checkbox.
- Filter or sort by Product and add up the Count column for the affected product. If the total equals the seat count from step 2, the pool is fully in use.
- To see failed checkouts, clear Active Sessions and look for denied transactions for the product around the time the user reported the issue.
- Sign in to the Ansys Licensing Portal as a Licensing Portal Administrator.
- Get a seat for the affected user
- Use the Email, User and Host columns in Ansys Licensing Portal → Web → Transactions to find who is holding seats.
- Ask users who are not actively working to close their Ansys applications so the seats are released. Long-running sessions (high Hours values) are a good place to start.
- If a user has closed Ansys but a seat is still held on their machine, have them open Ansys Licensing Settings → Products and click Check In All. Check In All only releases seats that user's own machine has checked out. It can't be used to release a seat held by someone else, so the affected user (not another administrator) needs to do this step on their own machine.
- Once a seat is free, have the affected user click the refresh icon in Licensing Settings. Available should now be greater than 0.
- Relaunch the Ansys application.
Prevent recurrence
- Check Web →Transactions regularly, or use Web → Reporting for historical usage, to see when the pool hits capacity.
- If the pool regularly runs out of seats during working hours, contact your SimuTech account manager to discuss adding seats.
