ERROR - AEDT Unable to Open Legacy ACIS Geometry Projects in 2025 R1 and Later

                          Authored by Heribert Colombo June 3rd, 2026 4 views 0 likes KB3834928

                          ERROR

When opening a legacy HFSS or AEDT project in Ansys Electronics Desktop (AEDT) 2025 R1 or later, the following message may appear

"...was created with ACIS geometry kernel. It cannot be accessed by Electronics Desktop version 2025 R1 and beyond. Please use 2024 R2 version to translate into Parasolid."

                          Software & Version

Ansys Electronics Desktop (AEDT) 2025 R1 and later

This example was observed when opening a legacy 2023 R1 HFSS project in AEDT 2026 R1 but is not necessarily limited to this version.

                          Description/Cause

This error occurs because AEDT transitioned from the ACIS geometry kernel to the Parasolid geometry kernel beginning with AEDT 2025 R1.

Projects created using the ACIS geometry kernel can no longer be opened directly in AEDT 2025 R1 and later releases.

***The cause(s)/solution(s) identified in this documented instance may not be the only cause(s)/solution(s) for this error.***

                          Solution

Convert the project using AEDT 2024 R2

                          1. Download and install Ansys Electronics Desktop 2024 R2 from the Ansys Archived Releases Download page
                          2. Open the legacy project in AEDT 2024 R2
                          3. Translate or export the geometry to Parasolid format
                          4. Save the updated project
                          5. Open the converted project in AEDT 2025 R1 or later

*AEDT 2024 R2 is the final release that supports the ACIS geometry kernel and can be used as an intermediate migration release.
