                          HOW TO - Fix Ansys Installation / Functionality Issues

                          Description

                          Installation / Functionality issues are one of several types of issues that can prevent Ansys from working.  Knowing what theses specific causes are will help you identify and rule them out.

                          Solution

                          Possible Causes (most to least common) Solution

                          Licensing Connectivity / Checkout Issue

                          • Licensing Connectivity and Checkout issues should be ruled out first and are NOT an Installation / functionality issue.
                          • Test & Fix FlexNet License Manager Connectivity Issues 
                          • Fix Ansys License Checkout Issues 

                          Client settings/preferences are incorrect or corrupt

                          • Forced shutdown of application/OS.
                          • Installing a new license or software version alongside older versions.

                          Reset Ansys Settings to Default 

                           

                          Corrupt Ansys Installation/Files

                          • Right clicking and selecting run as administrator when installing was not performed, resulting in an incomplete installation (even when the installation didn't throw errors).

                          Re-run Ansys client installation by right clicking setup file and selecting Run as Administrator.  No need to uninstall.

                           

                          Outdated GPU, System Drivers or Windows Updates

                          • Outdated GPU drivers is the most common cause, but System Drivers and Windows updates can be as well.

                          Update Drivers & Software

                           

                          Corrupt Ansys Installation/Files

                          • Antivirus / Endpoint Detection (AV/EDR) blocked files during the installation (if often does this silently).

                          Troubleshoot Antivirus/EDR Software with Ansys

                           

                          Corrupt Ansys Installation/Files

                          • Broken .dll registrations can be caused during windows or other software updates, corrupt files caused by forced shutdowns, incorrect settings not easily reset by other methods, corrupt temporary files or registry settings.

                          Comprehensively Reinstall Ansys

                           

                          Product/CAD Settings are missing/corrupt or miss-configured

                           

                          Run Product & CAD Configuration Manager‍ (5 min)

                           

                          Antivirus / Endpoint Detection (AV/EDR) Actively Blocks Ansys

                          • This can block Ansys or files it relies on from running (this often occurs silently)

                          Troubleshoot Antivirus/EDR Software with Ansys

                           

                          Corrupt or missing Microsoft Visual C++ pre-requisite files

                          • Bad Windows update, application crashes, forced shutdowns, faulty hardware.

                          Reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ pre-requisite software

                           

                          Remote Desktop Software (Windows RDP, TeamViewer, GoToMyPC, etc.) is causing issues.


                          Note: Connecting to a Linux machine via xrdp is not supported by Ansys. Remote Display Support 

                          Can you repeat the problem when working from the computer locally?  

                          • If so, the problem is not related to remote desktop software.  If not, please contact SimuTech Support, however, it's possible your remote software may not be supported.

                          Ansys software bug

                           

                          Eliminate your Model, Ansys Version & Computer as the Cause, then contact SimuTech Support.  SimuTech will then troubleshoot the specific symptoms based on screenshots and logs that you send.

                           

                          Corrupt Windows Installation

                          • Bad Windows update, faulty hardware, Windows Rot, Windows Updates, application crashes, forced shutdowns, faulty hardware.

                           

                          1. Check Windows Event Logs for System Errors.
                          2. Check & Repair Your Windows Installation
                          3. Comprehensively Reinstall Ansys if errors were found.
                          4. Reinstall Windows if Windows errors cannot be resolved or the issues persists. 

                           

                           

                          Misc Fluent Issues

                          • To help narrow down the issue, the following items can be ruled out. 
                          • Disable your WiFi adapter, if present.
                          • Disable the Firewall
                          • Set the number of solver processes to 1 in the fluent launcher.
                          • In the Fluent launcher > try both Enabling and Disabling Double precision.
                          • In the Fluent launcher > Parallel Settings > Change the MPI Types try both msmpi and intel MPI
                          • Disable Hyper-Threading in the computer bios.

                           

                           

                          Less Common Causes to Consider

                          • Check if Ansys client software is being blocked by the Client Windows Firewall ‍(not server firewall)‍
                          • Were any Windows or security updates recently installed the may be causing the issue?
                          • VPN software can sometimes cause issues, specifically we've seen issues with Cisco AnyConnect and Fluent as it relies on network settings.
                          • Disable Hyper-Threading in the computer bios.
                          • Does your IT Department have any security or group policies that may be causing the issue?
                          • Does your IT Department having roaming profiles configured that may interfere with default installation locations? Contact SimuTech Support.
                          • Is there any windows file permission issues or warnings that indicate certain folders that Ansys installs to writes to may be restricted?
                          • Are you trying to install from a network drive?
