INFO - Ansys License Server Changes Introduced in Version 2024R1
Authored by Lincoln DeCoursey July 27th, 2024 965 views 2 likes KB2520169
Description
Historically, Ansys License Manager relied on three main processes and ports to communicate with clients: FlexLM, Vendor Daemon, and Licensing Interconnect. Starting with version 2021R1, Ansys streamlined this communication by using only two processes: FlexLM and the Vendor Daemon.
Ansys License Manager retained the License Interconnect service as a backward-compatibility measure for clients running Ansys 2020R2 and earlier.
Now, beginning with Ansys 2024R1, there is a key difference compared to previous versions: this particular backward compatibility is no longer included in fresh installs of the License Manager.
What does this mean for you and your users?
-
Licensing Interconnect Service Discontinued:
- Since 2021R1, Ansys software no longer uses the Licensing Interconnect service provided by its License Manager.
- License Manager provides Licensing Interconnect merely for backward compatibility with Ansys clients running 2020R2 and older.
-
Fresh Installs of Ansys License Manager (2024R1):
- Fresh installations of Ansys License Manager no longer include the Licensing Interconnect service.
- If you perform a fresh install of License Manager from 2024R1, you cannot support client versions 2020R2 or earlier.
-
Upgrade Installs of Ansys License Manager (2024R1):
- Upgrade installs (where the installer detects a prior License Manager version) are not affected.
- In such cases, the 2024R1 installer carries the Licensing Interconnect service forward.
-
Supporting Older Clients:
- If you need a fresh License Manager at version 2024R1 but also need to support clients running Ansys 2020R2 or older, follow this two-step process:
- Install an older License Manager software (e.g., License Manager 2023R2) that includes the Licensing Interconnect feature.
- Perform the install of License Manager 2024R1 as an upgrade. The Licensing Interconnect feature will be carried forward.
- If you need a fresh License Manager at version 2024R1 but also need to support clients running Ansys 2020R2 or older, follow this two-step process:
-
Addressing Fresh Installs without License Interconnect:
- If you’ve already fresh-installed License Manager 2024R1 without the Licensing Interconnect feature and encounter issues, there’s no direct way to add the Licensing Interconnect feature afterward.
- Instead, completely uninstall the 2024R1 License Manager and follow the two-step process outlined above.
-
Overall Theme of Backward Compatibility Upheld:
- Ansys maintains its commitment to backward compatibility, even with the latest License Manager. This principle ensures compatibility with older licenses and client software, preserved through a two-step install process. Users are advised to always run the latest License Manager for optimal functionality.
