Description

Ansys software requires several simple, but unique, steps to install correctly.  Our detailed, but easy to follow instructions will help you download and install your Ansys software and ensure your installation is a success!

Deployment Methods

Solution

Step #1 - Gather Info Before Proceeding

Delete

Skip this step if...

Skip straight to the Step #3 if you already have a license server deployed in your organization AND it's running the latest version.

  • Identify the deployment method and name of the license server/computer your license was issued to.
  • Two applications are required to use Ansys - The License Manager and the Client Software.
  • In multi-user deployments, the license manager should not be installed on the client computer.
  • Have your license file on hand if you will be installing a new license server. This is not required if you are only updating the license manager to the latest version.

Step #2 - Download & Install the License Manager

License Manager (Windows)

Delete

Note

  • The steps to install and upgrade the license manager software are the same.
    • If upgrading, the existing license file (& option file if applicable) will remain and a license does not need to be installed unless you have received a newer license.
  • A client cannot checkout a license from a server running a version older than the client software.  In this case, the license server must be updated to the newest version.
  1. Download Installation Files
    1. First, Sign up for access to the Customer Portal if you have not already done so.
    2. Login to the Ansys Customer Portal > Select Downloads > Current Release > expand the Tools section.
      1. Can't access the portal?
    3. Download the package called Ansys License Manager (~400MB)
  2. The next steps must be performed on the computer that your license file was issued to when you Gathered License Server Host Info.
  3. Delete

    Don't miss these steps!

    * Skipping these steps won’t always produce error messages during the installation, but unfortunately can still corrupt the install and cause various software errors.

  4. Prepare the Installation Files
    1. Unzip the file:
      1. Right click the file > select Extract All.  (If the setup file is run without unzipping the archive file first, the installation will appear to complete successfully, but the program will not function properly)
  5. Delete

    Comprehensive Install (Optional)

If you are troubleshooting a difficult issue and have already re-installed once, please do the following before proceeding:

    • Manually Reinstall Prerequisite Microsoft Software‍
    • If you suspect the downloaded files were corrupted, you may also Verify the Integrity of Installation Files, however, this is very uncommon.
  6. Install the Software
    1. Once the file has been unzipped, right click the setup.exe file > Run as Administrator
      1. Note - Be aware that the license manager will be stopped during the installation and clients will not be able to communicate with the license server during this time. The installation typically takes ~ 5min.
    2. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.  Default values are recommended unless there is a specific reason that requires otherwise.
    3. Upon completing the installation, the License Management Center web page will open:
  7. For Brand New Installations / Licenses
    1. Install your Ansys license file(s)
    2. Next, you must add firewall exceptions to your firewall‍ in order for other client computers to communicate with your license server.
  8. For Upgrade Installations
    1. The previously installed license file will remain in place.  You can verify this by selecting View FlexNet Licenses.
    2. Verify that the license manager is running by selecting View Status/Start/Stop License Manager.
  9. Communicate License Server Name to Your Users
    1. They will need to specify this server name (not IP address) in the client license settings.
    2. Send all users these instructions‍.

Step #3 - Download & Install the Client Software

Ansys Client Software (Windows)

Note

Installing a newer version of the client software does not remove older versions.  All versions installed on a computer can be used simultaneously.

Installing Older Versions

If multiple versions of Ansys need to be installed, the most recent version must be installed last, otherwise Ansys licensing & checkout will not work properly. If you need to install an older version and already have a newer version installed, reinstall the latest version after installing the older version(s).

Update Your License Manager

Licensing checkout issues can arise if the client software is running a newer software version than the license manager. In this is the case, the license server must be updated to the newest version.  HOW TO - Check Ansys License Server Version‍.

      1. Can't access the portal?
    3. Select your Download the installation files of your choice:
      1. Primary Packages: If you only need to install a single physics package, downloading the primary package (zip file) is normally easiest as the download is smaller.
      2. ISO Images:  If you are installing multiple physics packages, we recommend downloading the ISO files because these files include all physics packages (excluding Electronics) which makes installation faster.
  2. Delete

    Don't miss these steps!

If you are troubleshooting a difficult issue and have already re-installed once, please do the following before proceeding:
